1. Oh Wow!
The best reason to increase your budget is that you’ve decided to upgrade and upscale the choices you first made. It’s very important, though, that this be a conscious decision and we will let you know if this is happening. Once you start looking at appliances, you may discover ones with smart features you didn’t even know existed. You may fall in love with a gorgeous tile that costs more per square foot but is worth it for the style. You thought basic cabinets would be fine, but you see all the new organizing features available, and decide that they can make a big difference in how you use the kitchen. For example, would you find it life-changing to have that beloved stand mixer on a shelf that rises up out of the cabinet with no heavy lifting and tucks away out of sight when you’re done?
2. Oops!
Something that can have a really big – and bad – impact on the budget is changing your mind once the project is already underway, demolition has begun, and appliances removed. If you decide you want the refrigerator on the opposite side of the kitchen, work needs to stop, and the kitchen reconfigured. If you decide you really don’t need that commercial style range with 6 burners and it’s already been delivered, that’s a problem. Sometimes, however, there may be unforeseen damage caused by water, termites, mold or latent structural issues that reveal themselves only after walls are opened or flooring removed.
